A patient undergoing thyroid FNA via the non-aspiration technique (needle only). The method requires the use of a G25-27 needle which is used to sample a small cone of tissue with an up and down movement, while gently rotating the needle itself.
A patient undergoing thyroid FNA via the aspiration technique (with Franzen' s pistol - syringe holder). A 10 ml syringe is used and aspiration with the pistol is applied only when inside the nodule. If blood appears in the syringe aspiration should be discontinued and the material smeared on a slide after having disconnected the needle and aspirated some air into the syrynge.
